Draft ahead of next Wild Show / some chat on @wenotno

Chris Norton is away on jury service so me and JD are extending our talk on a Thursday to last beyond 10.30 and towards 12. Last week we repeated a clip from guest Joseph Parsons as he is on another UK tour. This coming week we hope to persuade the Storyteller to stay maybe 15 minutes after the Drama Hour show.

Previously he did an evening performance as part of Management Theory at Work in Radio, a day conference at the Bike Shed Theatre two summers ago. This covered critique and how academics relate to management projects, digital disruption for example. What I want to discuss is how much has changed meanwhile and whether the positioning of the performance should also change.

I think about various sequences:-

  •  The layout of the book about the Learning Company , 
  •  the programme for the first two conferences Management Theory at Work 
  •  the social media version to relaunch another conference ( nothing so far) - #mtw3
  •  versions of Management Theory at Work in Radio - #mtwr

going into reverse,  #mtwr is now a collection of sound clips that could take a day, could be explained in 30 minutes with brief extracts. Central case study actual problem of how FM radio adjusts to social media, starting with music and including news / chat shows. ( Radio 1 Academy in Hull soon, continues from Devon in 2016)

The Standup Philosopher performance at #mtwr covered issues from the Critical Management Studies aspect of the first actual conference. Chris Grey concluding keynote challenged why academics would get involved in practice anyway, let alone check out technology and the learning company. This should be at the beginning so people can choose to go home or go to another meeting.

The Learning Company book has not been revised to relate to recent social learning developments. There could be playlists on YouTube and other platforms exploring developments from previous versions until a new print version appears.

As video ( or visual radio as Radio 1 call it ) the Lancaster campus is the basis of a straight line with variation in set. Can start with  tech vision at Info Lab 21 , then to critique at Management School, then to Alexanderplatz to check bookshop / library / cafe wi-fi actual situation. The towards arts and humanities for further comment. As of 2017 it seems there has already been substantial change in this central space ( recording will wait anyway till later in the year when the spine is renovated, currently a building site ). So the focus of the drama may have moved into the social science / humanities space towards the arts.

I have done the basis of a sequence around voice computer interfaces and AI. This has links at different locations. Will be updated, mostly the critique phase.

There is a garden ( generating time as first intended) with a balcony that could work as a stage. The sound from the Bike shed Theatre was not too good but the lighting was ok. Recently Bad Blood was ok from the Workshop space in the Phoenix. May try something out and / or use a green screen to transfer to Lancaster later. Not sure. Depends on what any of this would fit with.

At a recent writing workshop in Cumbria I was shown how chance can be worked into a plot. Stock elements of story can be mixed by throwing dice. So if there is a tech vision at the InfoLab 21 end, say a 50% chance it gets past the management school in a form still recognised. But only 25% chance of welcome in the Arts / Soc Sci end even though it may seem to have already happened in the central space. Move the drama along as best fits on any occasion.

Meanwhile in Exeter the Wild Show / @wenotno also considers the urban space around the Phonic FM studio. seems to be like a pizza slice , quarter of a circle starting from North Street and High Street with the Museum nad related buildings in the middle. This is another set, background for chat. but also the reality can be reported. Recently Tubers ( just outside the space across a car park) offers a Youtube Academy. Aimed at young future stars so the business model cannot yet be fully tested. The studio can be hired on a day rate so open to productions as well as being a significant development. Interviews could just ask about how people respond and think differently about online video.

Getting back to next week, my guess is that Jon on @wenotno may think that things have already changed a lot, he prefers the phone to the CD as a source of music tracks. JD on thursday may prefer the reality of Pizza Slice Exeter to forms of fiction or speculation. Comment welcome ahead of the shows and updates later to this blog.

Quick Note on Joseph Parsons / Doghouse Roses Tour and BBC Radio cornwall

BBC Radio Cornwall still playing , may be Claire Rowley sitting in, not sure. Joseph Parsons Duo about half an hour in. Link about here - - should be available for about a month.  Two live songs and a short version of story as we heard on Wild Show last year in Exeter - Phonic FM.

So they did not need any of the clips loaded on Youtube. JD explained to me this morning on wild Show that most shows usually recreate such content in their own style. so we did use one clip again but other shows will do something else. Clips still there for more info if people want to find them. search on Joseph Parsons and Wild Show.

Meanwhile news is the new CD is called The Field - The Forest , recently released for UK. Sample tracks on Soundcloud, link on site.

So not sure which sounds will reach local radio for the rest of the tour. Hope they still include the Bridge Topsham if they get lots more bookings next time.

YouTube Right Time, UK Wrong Place

Note form as busy tomorrow, this will be expanded later.

Not only has YouTube RED not been launched in UK, the cable version of YouTube makes it even more difficult. According to the official blog Youtube TV is now available in "the nation’s largest metro areas—New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, and Philadelphia—with more U.S. markets coming soon." The "nation" meaning the USA of course.

  • YouTube Red Originals. With a YouTube TV membership, you can watch all of our YouTube Red Original series and movies right in the new YouTube TV app.

So it looks like the sub includes RED. Even stronger base for those production facilities in those locations.

Advertising is still horrible. I still think there is no point in launching #mtwr - sort of conference on management theory around radio - without a sub option to skip the ads. But this won't happen in the UK. So probably best to stick to playlists and links and check these metro areas as a start.

Same thing for music and performance. Seems to be some connection between media resource and music styles. So the YouTube mix of education and entertainment still making sense. Just with a limited role for the UK.

Notes on Joseph Parsons tour 2017, can radio swap stations?

This is to expand on a recent tweet which may be too cryptic. Coming out of a long weekend some things from last week may make sense this next week.

Last year on the Wild Show, Phonic FM in Exeter, we did an interview with Joseph Parsons and promoters of the Topsham / Launceston events. I recently noticed a 2017 tour, seems to find stops along the way to Scotland and the Doghouse Roses, mentioned in interview.

Also on tour booked for BBC Radio Cornwall. ( shows I relate to are on Tue and Thur so no fit this time with tour schedule)

Since last year I have thought more about radio / YouTube , clips and reuse. So have divided the 2016 interview into six clips. Creative Commons on YouTube. Added to playlist of samples from last year.

BBC and other local media very welcome to use any of this. Should this be a general approach to a tour?

Could we use an extract later from BBC Cornwall for review and comment? Repeat some info anyway?

#mtwr, RGB2 as channels for YouTube

See previous posts on how the channels started as developments from Rougemont Global Broadcasting / my own basic Will Pollard channel. Problem is how to get more definition and raise production standards. So far the scope has been very wide. The idea is for Management theory at Work in Radio to relate to radio as an example of organisation in flux. The Management Theory at Work conferences showed a basis of theory for such situations and a more academic version could be revived for a more general model. RGB2 could cover performance near Exeter but starts with topics around this, production and arrangements. There are now many YouTube channels that can be supported. So far some of the same ideas turn up that are also part of the #mtwr discussion. Possibly this will be more as chat than tending towards academic terms. Not quite sure but there will be a bit more focus for both channels.

Meanwhile the Will Pollard / Rougemont Global Broadcasting channel will continue with much the same scope, though including source material that may be edited later for the other channels. For example stock shots of a walk through Lancaster campus that will only make sense when the talks are part of the edit.

In Exeter the concentration will be on Albert Space West, the area close to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. Possibly more near the river and canal over the summer. But some locations will just be ides in a blog as text, not so much full video till some sort of funding is arranged.

YouTube RED is still not launched in the UK. Advertising is not going to fit with an academic / professional audience though subscriptions should be ok comparing to conference fees. Somewhere on the planet there is probably already an online conference about management theory and radio. Or how sound content marketing relates to education sites. We will keep looking. For local social media YouTube has also launched a cable service in some USA urban areas. Presumably this encourages more content in YouTube itself that can be found for local interest. Exeter or other UK areas could work just as well but presumably with less funding opportunities.

I will do a lot more looking at playlists. Still hoping to develop channels longterm but seems more likely that content or models already exist and often best to link anyway.

Tubers supports better use of green screens

Tubers is a new academy in Exeter, the courses are intended for young people. Anyone can rent space though and with friends from Phonic FM I have tried out the VR space that doubles as a green screen. The first edit attempts did not work all that well. On Adobe Premiere Elements I just said yes when it offered to remove the solid background on loading. I should have waited till I found the green key, hidden away in the tools menu. This works much better though.

This has also encouraged me to look again at previous attempts. Using a blue wall in the high street works better with a still from the park.

Expect more of this approach. We will probably be outside more over the summer but return to Tubers when there is less light.

Both of these are on RGB2, the start of a channel to raise production standards from the level so far. Not quite right yet, but the intention is there to understand green screens and work out how to be able to record all times of the year.

AI expands scope of post FM radio playlist / voice interfaces

The YouTube playlist on voice interfaces has been expanded to include AI. This follows a clip borrowed from the Today program on BBC Radio 4. Yuval Noah Harari spoke about the dangers in AI. On the Wild Show and @wenotno we made a connection with radio as in social media clips. This may have gone further than Today is yet aware of. Actual broadcasts are made up of clips and also the audience is able to switch to a choice of other sources. The voice assistants and/or search engines are part of this in ways we cannot fully control.

The playlist is currently suitable for radio, could be used as part of future shows, but also could relate to an academic or professional conference. At experimentality there was critique of the cloud.(Rob Coley and Dean Lockwood). Harari on AI is the closest yet to a similar take on voice interfaces that I can find. Suggestions welcome on other links.

Adobe Spark, Creative Hub Social , looking for connections Tech Exeter

Sorry for short notice but I only recently realised the Creative Hub Social is coming up at the Phoenix on Thursday. I am still trying to find connections around what we discovered about Adobe Spark at BETT. there was a lot else but this was the best free offer. How to link to other Adobe products? Phoenix seems a good base as they have licences on Creative Cloud. Still not sure about the video edit suite at University Library.

Spark is actually in the cloud, started on tablets, can create short video presentations, graphics including txt, web pages.

Turns out Tech Exeter will also be in Phoenix, later time. Any legal hacks on Adobe? long shot but could be interesting.

Adobe has moved on to marketing and analytics. Big conference in London coming up. Looks expensive but maybe Digital Exeter knows someone attending? ( My focus still making sense of what we found at BETT, continues on Wild Show and @wenotno on @PhonicFM )

Drifting towards Success, maybe later

Exeter seems to have reached a new level in success. Not sure what to make of it as I am still in muddle mode though moving forward slowly. Last week I went to Digital Exeter and heard about Tubers, new video academy and studio for Youtube. Courses for young people fully booked. There are plans to expand to Plymouth and Bristol, later Cardiff and Taunton. I did try out the green screen there and now more or less know how to edit it, the first two attempts a bit messy. ( Don't accept the robot offer to fix the solid background when you load the clip, find the proper green key option hidden deep in the menu.)

Meanwhile I am still waiting for YouTube RED to launch in the UK so I can monetise new channels. I still don't like the adverts so continue with low level production values. Apparently the new Tubers audience have stopped watching TV and many Vloggers have vast numbers of views. So there is still potential and something continues.

The summer should allow better light outside so zero studio costs. I plan to visit Lancaster campus when they finish their walkway. The site could fit with a sequence for discussion. Topics may include voice recognition for computers, acceptance or not of the MOOC, priority for university investment in buildings or web resource. This last topic may be hardest to raise. Iconic architecture is a good backdrop to ask the question though. Is it possible that disruption will even reach the Business School? I cannot find much about this so far, maybe it is part of the style in which events are part of a success story.

Futurelearn may have got past the stage of loss making and doubt. ( Not sure about the finances but they have started some charges) The OU closures of regional buildings were reported with regret, rarely seen as having any benefit. Recently some courses are on offer connected to Deakin Cloud Campus and this seems a possible route to a viable system. I notice that IBM Watson is in the background. Not sure if this works through voice but it could compare with Alexa from Amazon and others. So during the year I may find a story about this, probably borrowing a clip for a playlist.

A solid story of something working could get a comment from academics on a UK campus, more possible than discussing a messy problem situation. The next Tech Exeter conference is in September so could be a target date even if conversation is informal.

Management Theory at Work in Radio can probably work well as a playlist on YouTube even if a channel is delayed. YouTube RED is available in South Korea and other places where an annual sub compares with cost of a day conference. So content possible without adverts, academics and professionals may well accept.

RGB2 still aims to raise production standards for Rougemont Global Broadcasting ( formal name for my YouTube channel aka user Will Pollard ) but in near future will probably look at the "making of" or "not making of" aspects of other channels. Creatives tend to have their own approach but some comment can turn up round the edges. ( includes bits of sound for Wild Show and @wenotno on @PhonicFM )

The LikeMinds event will return to Exeter later in the year, located at the castle so potentially a good fit for Rougemont Global Broadcasting. Topics are around breakout brands though. #mtwr and #RGB2 may not be at a suitable stage. Still some sort of connection should be possible, even if just messing about with radio as a sketch.

Next event is Hustings at the Boat Shed for Devon County Council elections. I am assuming video is ok but not sure how it will turn out. Suggest Creative Commons and plenty of options and mixing. #mtwr has benefited from the Bike Shed as a venue. The river and canal should work as a location with free lighting but some sort of support always welcome.

Brexit, British Empire, #Futurelearn, @DavidOlusoga

I was fascinated to read David Olusoga in the Observer on Sunday. The headline states that "Empire 2.0" is "dangerous nostalgia". The text concludes with mention of "delusion". Previously Empire 2.0 has turned up for me while watching an interview with Liam Fox on Sky News. He told Sophie Ridge that the term came from mostly from civil servants. But he seems to support the associated ideas.

Empire 2.0 about 7 minutes in but best to watch all of it for context.

I recently did a MOOC for Futurelearn from Exeter University on the British Empire. My homework was a short text on where the Empire was now or something like that. I chose to concentrate on attitudes around Brexit. Text below, not time yet to cut and paste this together. Just notes so far.

David Olusoga mentions Hugh Gaitskell in 1962 for a take on the Commonwealth. The Conservative Party could be much more interesting. The book "Continental Drift" by Benjamin Grob-Fitzgibbon (CUP 2016) covers policy on Empire and Europe from Churchill to Major.

Possible muddle here between history, journalism and social media / gossip. I shall carry on with a blog anyway. May tidy this up, meanwhile cut and paste from Google doc where I kept my notes so far


Legacy of British Empire

The present situation is part of European history and empires, the Dutch and Portuguese included. The financial aspect of the British Empire is now part of the USA dollar situation. So there is a wider context than first appears.

Public opinion is influenced by empire, notions of jingoism (UK) and exceptionalism (USA) for example. These seem to be less rational than could be shown as related to anything specific. Hitchcock remade the 39 Steps as North by North West , there is not much need to describe the external threat.

History as a subject can cross over with journalism or just speculation. The book Continental Drift by Benjamin Grob-Fitzgibbon describes UK policy on Europe up to the time of John Major. It shows how attitudes to Empire led to expectations of a role in Europe that turned out to be quite different to reality. The move towards leaving Europe has been based on an idea of “post-Geography” .

How much sense this makes remains to be seen. It is possible that the British government is deluded, as are most of the newspapers and the public. Will a global market be less of a threat for the “just about managing”? It is not yet possible to discuss this as history but whatever happens will be explained as part of a longer story.

Hitchcock continued Buchan themes in film from novels. The course included the adventure stories in print. Hitchcock developed repeated ideas in USA from UK and they fit with Empire and Cold War.

Expanded Vagueness

This post will itself be expanded soon. I am just running out of time this weekend so need a quick version to explain how other posts might still fit together.

Previously "Intended Vagueness" posted on LinkedIn claimed that vagueness could be positive as a way to make connections. Ideas about the Learning Company or Organization had been criticised as too vague to make sense for academics.

My interest in learning and quality came from the print industry, then I became more interested in digital and all forms of communication. The words and search tags I use are ways to connect mostly these three areas.

"Social learning" seems to work well on Twitter and relates to Futurelearn and most MOOCs. It may not be clearly defined for academics but there is some support in practice. I have lost trackof Mode ! and 2 knowledge. Design Science is not being updated as far as I can tell. "Design Thinking" crops up more often. Communication is probably whatever the London College of Communication covers. Not sure they have fully worked out where print fits in but some statement will arrive with the new building.

This vagueness could include Management Learning, the Learning Company, Edwards Deming, various words used in previous versions of the Hello Spiders blog. So the current stage is to afford some connections. Forms of clarity may follow but the word cloud will get more crowded.

YouTube channels sorting out soonish

Some progress on a leap forward, but meanwhile quite confusing. I have been presenting my YouTube channel as Rougemont Global Broadcasting. this started as a joke way to test possibility of Exeter TV. Meanwhile the online video aspect has gained strength. I still think a local cable channel is worth continuing with but back to topic.

Subscriptions seem to offer an alternative to advertising. Mostly relevant for the conference style content. How to demonstrate production levels ahead of subscriptions and income? A new channel - mtwr - was started for Management Theory at Work in Radio but only one video was in it.

This just shows the extent of the problem. Sound ok in Phonic FM studio but lighting is terrible. Recently I went to the Lancaster campus and recorded some clips about voice interface that also showed how locations could be used in a sequence. More on this later. You should get an idea from the videos on YouTube.

Some topics continue as sound in Exeter. The Spine walk in Lancaster is being updated so a walk between spots is best left till later in the year. There can be tests meanwhile including links to other spots.

In Exeter there is now a Tubers studio, mostly intended for teenagers. There may be hours of the day when it can be used but not sure this will suit the guests. Definitely a good sign for how things are moving.

Production may get easier with software to compensate for lack of equipment. Adobe Spark improved this clip from original. Broken into two as Spark seems to get impatient after 15 seconds.

Variety continues, playlists offer the options for a mix.

RGB2 also exists as a subscription possibility for music and performance in and around Exeter. Plans for later this month assume better weather.

Digital Disruption and Business Schools

( Based on an earlier draft in Read G put by mistake. feedback ok on using the pictures)

 For a while I have been interested in how media organisations transition with digital technology. It sometimes seems to me that academics and business schools comment about this as if they are not part of it. Somehow the buildings and campus will continue as a base even if FM radio for example disappears in the cloud.

Learning Technologies has some involvement from HE so there will be comment on this later.  At  BETT there were a couple of events that might make a lead news item.

Futurelearn won the BETT Award for Free Digital Content/Open Educational Resources for Schools. I don't think they are yet much recognised at HE level. The Open University has cut back on regional support centres in the UK though they continue to invest in Futurelearn. I don't know of other examples where this sort of switch has already happened.

The Department for International Trade had a theatre where one presentation was from the Online Business School. I did do a video but the background noise is a problem Here are some stills to show the gist of it. BETT is a solid tech show and I guess there will be more HE over time, including some more examples of digital plans, maybe with some disruption in the background.

Any links or content most welcome. I will try to do an expanded post in the next week or two.

Probable visit to Lancaster the week after next. Hope to check the campus even if just for currant backgrounds. Notes below also on Exeter when I get back. the topics and links are all over the place. There will be a bit more focus later.

Mostly the same as before. Campus as location, even if the clips come from somewhere else. InfoLab21 as tech inspiration, business school as critique, library/ bookshop as check on current situation. The walk continues north but has less focus, more art and speculation.

Repeat, any site could be an arts centre, including a campus. One clip from Goethe MOOC still on Youtube and worth a look. Actually iconic buildings still continue, but the online aspect is an issue.

So one question is how to find a studio or something like it. Phones may be ok depending on post production. 

Question also about voice as a computer interface. (In Exeter the Phonic FM studio is ok for sound but terrible lighting so not much video there)

When back in Exeter I will follow up on Adobe software. At BETT there was news about Spark and Chromebooks. Not sure how this fits with the full Creative Cloud. There are licences at the Phoenix Arts Centre but not sure about the suite in the campus library. 

In general there are resources around enough for an edit once the locations are sorted and a better script outline is available. Question continues as to how disruption will reach the campus.

University as a business continued, skills and research

After previous post on business schools I found an article in print Guardian yesterday suggesting some UK universities may close because of financial issues around reduced numbers of students. Link HERE , Apparently the "lower tariff" unis are losing out to the "research-intensive".

What strikes me is that there is no mention of online competition. Presumably the "research-intensive" are not offering skills that can be on offer from forms of MOOC with a certificate. LinkedIn Learning for example now work closely with several software providers.

Maybe I should use "research" and "skills" rather than modes one and two. Probably easier for most people to follow.

Nothing yet to suggest that business schools face any problems. But I gathered at Learning Technologies that ITPRO.TV might offer business course as well as technology. Not sure what the time scale is on this. But there could be some comment on possible disruption. Business school shifts resource online?

Mode One Knowledge as an Imaginary

My impression is that there has not been much recently about knowledge as Mode One and Mode Two. I usually try to find something when wondering why Peter Scott writes so little about the MOOC and associated technology. This note is just to check for some response. I plan to do some more study since the Xmas break when I noticed a new paper uploaded to Academia but the detail may have to wait.

Bob Jessop has another version on a website, could be easier to find. My first take is that anything could be assumed to be an Imaginary, for example forms of knowledge. The paper looks at learning in some sort of crisis. I am going to take the crisis to be some sort of digital transformation. See previous posts on if universities need to be on a campus or could be blended with online.

Crisis-management and learning
Learning has a critical role in crises (including crises of crisis-management), affecting the capacity to formulate imagined recoveries. It has the same selectivities (semiotic, structural, technological, and agential) as semiosis more generally and also undergoes variation, selection, and retention. A crisis does not automatically lead to learning: cognitive capacities may be lacking or the situation may be too unstructured (chaotic); or, again, lessons learnt are irrelevant because the situation is too turbulent to apply them. Learning depends on a dialectics of Erlebnis and Erfahrung that has its own temporalities, shaped by crisis dynamics. Erlebnis refers to immediate experience in the face of disorientation and associated attempts to make sense of disorienting events/processes. Erfahrung refers to the lessons learnt from this disorientation and sense-making. Importantly, it typically includes an element of the objective dimensions of the crisis – lessons must be adequate to the crisis, not just idiosyncratic reactions.
More to look at later but this relate to academics as much as anyone. Knowledge continues to be developed in some form outside the formal universities, whether or not there is a crisis yet. Probably things appear to continue much the same, like book publishing. "Mode Two" still makes sense but "Mode One" is so far away I will try to study it as imaginary, possibly evolving the crisis.
Meanwhile I am coming across "design thinking" more than "design science". This is based on Twitter, I tend to click on the tags that show up. I will discuss this more with JD . Search on YouTube still shows us as a result for DJ and Design Science. We are just trying to work out what is going on with radio but theory is in background somehow.
Of course still following the Guardian and reporting on the MOOC etc. Objections seem to be that the energy is coming from commercial interests. Could not find any reporting on BETT or Learning Technologies. My suggestion is that YouTube should have been at BETT if only to show the scope of where learning now happens.

Hello Exeter Uni Library / Digital Suite and Adobe Software

This is a sort of extended tweet. Trying to find out who to contact about the workstations in the library and software in general.

I recently went to BETT and found out a bit about Spark and Chromebook options. I made some outline contacts but have not been able to get email replies since. Not sure I have the best info.

So who would know about the workstations on the lowest floor of the library?  Creative Suite is included but seems not to be on a subscription for latest versions. Room is also used for meetings and study.

Spark is online free software for social media content. Chromebooks coming soon that accept Android apps, reduced versions of Creative Cloud.

I am still checking out details but would like to know who and how to contact.

Big Fibs, printing in Exeter before William of Orange

In an age of alternative facts I can hold no strong opinions. But I was surprised when the BBC allowed Lucy Worsley to claim that William of Orange arrived in Exeter to make propaganda and brought his own printing press with him. An alternative view is that he headed for Exeter as there was already a printing press in production.

Extract from Exeter Working Papers in British Book Trade History Ian Maxted

"So far as we know at present the first resident printer does not appear in the city until 1683 and we do not know his name. ... Since 1683 the city has never lacked a resident printer ..." Thus W.G.Hoskins in Two thousand years in Exeter. He goes on to say that the first whose name is known for certain is Samuel Darker in 1698, noting that a printer with the initials J.B. printed for William of Orange in 1688 and that he is thought to be one John Baker. His statement has been widely accepted.

So this possibility is at least worth a mention.

Green screen can be white, more tests

Trying things out. I think we may not need a green screen as in the portable versions I saw at BETT. They may be worth investing in later but it seems from Adobe at Learning Technologies that software may cope with any block of colour so can be set up fairly easily. So here are some examples.

So now it should be possible to move the Background to BETT at ExCel

OK, now for a bit more study on what else is possible. I have Elements versions of Photoshop and Premiere, estimated knowledge about 20%.  Will try out Spark first then the versions for learning.

Adobe at BETT version one

Quick notes as too much to do ahead of Learning Technologies. Update later on both, see final para below.

As expected there was a thorough demo of Spark. Graphics to post with tweets, headings for social media sites, any shape or size for design around type. Also a quick video presentation based on voice ( Voice was a previous name for this) . I don't think I yet understand this. You can talk for more than 30 sec with another slide but I am still rambling too much. Also a web page creation tool that also creates a graphic for your tweet. It is all free so far but with Adobe branding at the end. You can remove it if you subscribe to the Creative Cloud.

However I asked about other links to the Creative Cloud and they don't seem to be there, No skills pathway that is obvious. If you want to learn actual type control you would have to start again. And the levels are not available if you load a Spark graphic into Photoshop. My guess anyway, someone should check.

There is much more training potential in the apps announced for Chromebooks. ( Spark I think is still Apple only but there is a web version). Google at BETT showed how a new range of Chromebooks could work better with graphics. The Adobe apps are reduced power versions of most of the Creative Cloud. More work to learn them than with Spark but they are still free and the Chromebooks will be cheap compared to a Mac Pro or whatever you think Photoshop deserves.

Meanwhile I continue with Photoshop / Premiere Elements on windows 10. I probably understand about a quarter of what is possible. Bits and pieces from Spark as well, sometimes fitted in.

I expect Adobe at Learning Technologies to be showing another approach to video - Adobe Presenter. This creates video from Powerpoint slides. When to use this rather than Spark? Can you edit in bits from one to the other?

#not(BETT2017) some things not at BETT 2017

These are quick notes for future reports and to seek responses. Even a show as large as BETT is interesting for the companies that choose not to be there or other things going on in background.

Voice as interface

Amazon devices seem to have got most attention at CES. Google and Microsoft will be at BETT but no advance promo so they may not have info on their offers. Apple officially not there but fans may have something to say. On the @wenotno show we have so far found that Apple is way ahead for access but this may change. Start at SEN and see where it leads to. ( Pearson are working with IBM on AI / machine learning but no obvious voice aspect. Not much at BETT anyway. Pearson still interested in education transformation but not much info on current vision)

The aim of these notes is to find out more, so if very wrong please add comments

Not sure what is behind these voices. Call it Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning but what is learning at BETT? User experience?


Only Futurelearn are there apparently. But Guardian today has a section on Postgrad Study that includes some news (page 13) Futurelearn will this year offer a full postgrad degree with Deakin. Liverpool has 10,000 postgrads online. Oxford will launch a MOOC with edX in Feb. No Guardian mentions for MOOCs outside UK but this is a start. ( see also ReadG, post soon on how they cover MOOC news)

BBC Learning

When Radio 1 came to Exeter for their Academy in 2016 it turned out that BBC Learning was much involved. Not sure how it fitted together. They were not interested in normal telly, how the main event ended up on BBC4. Only the Live Lounge, BBC iPlayer and YouTube channels. Just my take, could be wrong. BBC stopped going to BETT after pressure from other suppliers including the Guardian and Channel 4. Seems a shame as Guardain and Channel 4 have stopped going anyway as far as I know. BBC now may be there with the Micro:bit and other organisations involved. All will become clear as far as BETT event next week. But what is happening with educational use of old clips from telly? ITN was there last year but not sure what is happening this time.

Are radio and video skills part of education?

Thinking about how to map BETT with Exeter and the campus. So far it might work ok. The Phoenix has training courses in Adobe Creative Suite so we can report back on how Spark could fit with this. Also the university library has a Multimedia Suite with Adobe software. But I am not sure what the interest level is compared to the books and the journals. Based on a couple of visits it was not as busy or booked out as I would expect. Maybe the media studies is more part of the student guild. Not sure. Meanwhile Adobe put more energy into video and images. they still turnover Postscript and PDF for flat pages with text. Something not really fitting together though. This post will be expanded and/or altered if I have missed something. Continues as chat on @wenotno 12 -2 today on @phonicfm so this post to keep the blog more or less in sync.

@yonidayan_    was on a course which now seems to have ended. Where is the research happening longterm?

Other reports show Futurelearn has the scale to be on the list from a global point of view. They were at BETT last year it appears but I missed them. Somebody please tweet a photo on day one.

Draft story around UK universities and BETT 2017

Should start with some hard news but as far as I know not much is happening. My theory is that at some point in time universities will invest more in online resource and less in buildings, iconic or as normal. However only the Open University seems to have moved in the case of Futurelearn. Possibly this an "out of crisis" situation. Funding for part time courses has become an issue. So far there are no other obvious examples.

Futurelearn is up for awards though at BETT. Both for HE and schools. So there could be a news item or maybe just a hint if there are other winners.

Meanwhile there are some shifts in attitudes to online learning. The Guardian had a "special report" on Tuesday as part of the Education section. Headline is "Online Learning : Not Just For Jobs". I cannot fine the version on Guardian website but the same headline is on Pressreader. . There is no obvious sponsor but the style reminds me of some of the special reports that appear to be linked to some of the people quoted. I mention this because I think there should be another version looking at the implications.

Dani Salvadori , director of economic enterprise at University of Arts London , claims that online learning is now about more than training for computers. However Matt Walton , chief product officer for Futurelearn says their own research shows employers can use info about short courses to choose which graduate to recruit. The final couple of paragraphs make mention of MOOCs , described as a "relatively new development with huge social potential". This may just appear to be true for Guardian reporters as there has not been much about the MOOC since 2013 when Peter Scott decided not to write about them except once.

The impression I got was that the MOOC might be ok for adult education / vocational / tech stuff but the top end research unis would more or less ignore them.

However things may be changing. Claire Kelly, manager of online learning and weekly courses at the University of Oxford is convinced that online courses fulfill a social need and recently met a student who turned out to be in her 90s. Perhaps there will later be change in other parts of the university.

Earlier Coursera is described as a "global learning provider" . I just did a Google search on "Coursera , MOOC , business model" and top of the list was an advert. I don't make this stuff up. Online Learning insights claim that  "MOOCs found their niche and business model in 2016" , published in Feb.   CEO Rick Levin told the Guardian that updating skills is vital as tech changes. The certification option is now used by several MOOC suppliers.

After or during BETT there could be more in the Guardian and other publications about the MOOC and current implications. Peter Scott seems worried about technology as associated with commercial operations and research outside universities. I cannot find much recent work on knowledge as modes one and two. There may be other ways to describe this but I guess there are now various scenes that could overlap more later.

Plenty of scope for more than one story. I will visit BETT with others from Phonic FM in Exeter. we are interested inschools radio and all forms of social media. News may come from Adobe Spark and / or YouTube RED if announced. Not sure if this will get much interest as print and text are still a major part of education resources.

YouTube RED UK as a looped story

Yesterday on @wenotno show on +Phonic FM we spoke of UK Red in the UK and a possible visit to King's Cross on way back from BETT. We can ask at Google stand ( booth ) when will Red be in UK? and they may reply as last year that as Google they don't know about YouTube. Also YouTube not at BETT.

Then later I did some online searching and found that there has already been a 2017 story in the Telegraph. This claims there will be a UK launch during 2017. But no source and ends with "Google did not comment." So may be based on conversation with record companies in discussion about contracts.

Mostly I read the Guardian and have noticed a couple of stories, Hannah Ellis Petersen on streaming music and a similar one from Charles Arthur though his was more about tech and included a reference to YouTube. I think the subscription option is a major aspect of the discussion. Getting rid of ads is important enough for many people to be prepared to subscribe. So the story can be a loop, without mention of RED UK, when it happens, and what then, else something different instead.

So we will stick with our plan. The show is called We Don't Know because we don't claim to know much, starting with what R&B is. It has extended to what radio is about or how to do it. Radio 1 Academy told us about visual radio but they have a licence fee to cover the Live Lounge. In theory any studio could record music video and hope for a share of subscription income through YouTube RED or similar. At BETT there may be other options or more rumour.

We suggest more stories include something about YouTube RED and whatever non comment seems most recent.

My interest is also in conference style content. I started with video around Management Theory at Work, then Management Theory at Work in Radio. #mtwr is quite casual and has low production values. How to move to a level with more subscribers? Academics and professionals are not going to put up with the advertising. So RED is a good option, worth waiting for most of 2017 for info on whether it will happen in UK.

Meanwhile the Telegraph story informs me that RED is available in South Korea, Mexica, Australia and New Zealand. Has this made it possible for better production on video from conferences? Links welcome.

By the way, YouTube should be at BETT and prepared to answer questions. Learning about sound is only the start.

Draft Story for BETT - Update on Voice as Interface

Catching up for 2017 finds a BBC report on CES. Consumer electronics is still on topic for BETT as an education show. BETT is not completely comprehensive but has the widest range of tech suppliers of any show in London. Also learning is possible outside of formal structures. It is relevant to look at what else is happening anyway.

 ( Take the first video, sounds a dreadful idea surely bedtime stories should be live voice? keep watching for a response, the aim seems to be to contrast with normal TV by offering choices. What will the toddlers make of school though? We need a five year plan soonish)

Quite high up is a section on "Voice control and other new interfaces" so it seems sense to continue with this as a main story. See previous post. No leads from BETT news as such but the Special Educational Needs area will cover existing voice recognition so is a good place to start.

The BBC also mentions gesture control and a form of Braille that sits on top of a tablet. Check BETT for something similar. CES is the end of this week so comment and opinion will travel during the month.

According to the BBC report "CES marks the beginning of a land grab by three of the leading virtual assistants: Amazon's Alexa, Microsoft's Cortana and the Google Assistant." No mention for Apple here, they have their own shows. No official presence at BETT either. But they are in the background.

This blog will link to radio shows on Phonic FM - @wenotno on Tuesday and Wild Show on Thursday. We may not make a complete report about anything but will get some quick links. There will be a sort out in February.

Meanwhile other media will do a better job on specific topics. we explore what can happen with social media and try things out. Continues as a post on Read G, mostly about the Guardian.
